TORONTO (May 26, 2008) – 400 communicators from across North America will descend on the city for the 2008 Catholic Media Convention, May 28-30 at the Sheraton Centre, in downtown Toronto.

The annual Catholic Media Convention brings together a cross section of those working in the Catholic media and in Catholic organizations: from communications directors to journalists, newspaper editors to television and radio personalities, the gathering provides an opportunity for education, networking and professional development.

For the last year, a diverse host committee of Catholic communicators has been hard at work preparing for the convention. This year’s committee co-chairs are: Joseph Sinasac, Publisher and Editor of the Catholic Register and Fr. Thomas Rosica, C.S.B., C.E.O. of the Salt and Light Catholic Media Foundation and Television Network.

Confirmed keynote speakers include:

Fr. Frederico Lombardi, S.J. , director of the Holy See Press Office and of Vatican Radio who will address: “When the Pope speaks to the World: Working with Modern Media.”

Margaret Somerville, widely acclaimed author of The Ethical Canary: Science, Society, and the Human Spirit, and law professor at McGill University, will speak on how faith-based media need to talk to a secular world.

Cardinal Marc Ouellet , Archbishop of Quebec City and primate of the Catholic Church in Canada, will speak on the new evangelization and the media.

The conference will include more than 30 speakers providing valuable insights through workshops and “master camps” on a variety of topics targeted at communication professionals from across North America.

The Catholic Media Convention is sponsored by the Catholic Press Association and the Catholic Academy for Communication Arts Professionals - the Toronto host planning committee also includes members of the Association of Roman Catholic Communicators of Canada (ARCCC), who will have an active presence at the convention. Tourism Toronto and the Ontario Government are special sponsors of the 2008 Media Convention.
